The magic of myths – full of monsters, gods, goddesses, heroes, sorceresses, they allow us to explore different aspects of our own nature in a playful and empowering way.
The first Heartfull Creative camp, a collaboration between HeartFull Creative creator Johanna Peters and the wonderfully talented artist and Waldorf-trained teacher Schuyler Witman, brought the heroic tale of Perseus to life.
The main goal of HeartFull camps and offerings is to connect to the enchantment of a story and to bring it to life in a creative and collaborative way with the kids.
We started by introducing a couple of different myths. As our first camp took place in the spring season, the story of Demeter and Persephone was an easy pick. The Perseus narrative also felt like it held rich possibilities with such a wide array of characters and plot twists and turns.
After exploring both myths, the kids decided to focus on the Perseus myth as our main story to present to families at the end of the week.
Over the next few days we continued to explore Ancient Greek cosmology and set to work on creating characters, costumes, and set pieces, weaving in music and dance to bring colour and rhythm to the story.
Pulling off a play presentation in one week is no small feat! But with the creativity of the kids and some generous costume support from families, we put together a wonderfully playful, humorous and inspired re-telling of the Perseus myth!
With this first camp under our belt, we were excited to keep going and during our creative summer camp we dove into Norse Mythology and the story of Thor’s missing hammer – stay tuned for a recap of that adventure and for posts on future camps and offerings!
Wishing you story-filled magic and inspiration!
